Good list. Often people don't realize the unethical nature of some of these practices. Thanks for sounding the warning!

Good tips, be sure not to link to junky or spammy sites from yours as well. Google doesn't penalize if they link to you(since there's nothing you can do about it if they do), but linking to them is your choice and can harm your reputation

Great reminder on what not to do when it comes to SEO. I agree that useless content is out of the question as there is no long term return to gain from it therefore making the invested effort all go to waste.

Well done Richard, A great article for people looking to otpimise there site. Sadly I have even seen reputable firms using some of the above pratices.

With regards to duplicate content, check out www.ragepank.com. I use Joomla quite a lot and find that I have to alter the htaccess a lot to stop the 200 (ok) from appearing many times. (This should only appear once per page).

Refreshing to note to find this article about some terrible SEO ideas. At least site owners will be warned as to what SEO tips are over-rated and what tips just dont work. And thanks for adding resources on what we can do if we are really using those tips.

Your suggestions here are all very good. In fact, they are critical, not just to get better page ranking, but also to avoid being penalized by Google. I have seen many sites go from #1 spot to the hundredth page of results simply because they have duplicate content. Or because of keyword stuffing.
